The Contender Waterfall Platen is the ultimate bevel finishing tool. The tight radius created is the easiest way to get clean, crisp plunge lines.
Traditional waterfall platens generate a lot of heat and wear that makes them inconsistent and slow to use. The Contender platen solves this by circulating water through an aluminum body to pull heat from the platen. It uses a built-in high temperature ceramic liner to grind against, offering long life. The plunge radius can be changed by switching out the hardened tool steel inserts. A pair of coolant spray nozzles offers the option to run a dribble of water on the back of the belt to keep the insert cool and the ability to spray flood coolant directly onto the blade if desired. The Contender misting attachment can be added as well.
Waterfall platens are an excellent option for finishing bevels. The angle of approach and increased visibility make them much easier to use.
The Bracket is made to fit the Contender Quick Change Platen System used on the Mach 4 Grinder. However, most platen frames can be adapted to make the platen fit by drilling two holes. There is side to side adjustment to center the platen up with the rest of the grinder.
Advantages over traditional platens:
Easier control and more visibility.
Cool grinding for thin edges on heat treated blades.
Various radius options for generating plunge lines.
Eliminates the “2-inch scratches” from the plunge line.
Tips for use:
Running the belt at a slower speed in reverse offers the most control.
Keep a slow stream or fast drip of coolant (water) onto the BACKSIDE of the belt to eliminate heat buildup in the insert.
Thicker belts like the Trizact Gator work well but aren’t necessary.
*Must be used with a coolant system to eliminate the heat buildup. Pumps and hose are available to purchase separately. The same coolant/hose set up used on the Contender Magnetic Heatsink and Quench Plate Press are compatible.
